Yakutat 2022 - Day 5 - last day

Greta and I had a similar game plan for our last morning of the trip. We would pack the majority of our gear over and stage it upstairs at Glacier Bear Lodge in the morning, so that we could have breakfast, go fish and then come back and check out (but be out of the room early enough) later in the afternoon before flying home. We decided to try Tawah Creek again, only this time from the middle access trail just about a 1/2 mile up from the confluence of the Lost river and Tawah creek.

The morning was a spectacular crisp cool, sunny Yakutat sunrise, with the first frost on the ground that we'd experienced. The walk out to the creek takes you ~400 meters through some pretty dense forest before you break out into similar bog like conditions that we experienced on our walk out to the mouth of the lost on day 4. We again targeted the low tide, this time figuring that we'd catch the incoming fish at an hour and 1/2 after low tide. We set up in 2 beautiful locations and began swinging spinners again the water in Tawah doesn't really flow fast enough for good spoon presentation at least not at low tied.

The sun was incredibly bright and honestly hard to look into to see our presentations, but if that was the only complaint we were going to have for the week, this was a pretty incredible trip. We gave it our all and stayed for about 3 hours past low tide with no takers. I sat on the bank reflecting on the week, again just enjoying watching Greta take cast after perfect cast across the pristine Alaskan creek, hoping for one more magical flash of chrome and a fight to remember.

It was not to be, however our walk out was full of joy realizing that by all accounts, the trip and week had been a success. We both like to be early birds to the airport, so we headed back to the lodge, closed our bill with the manager and picked up our loaded coolers knowing that we'd be returning to several changes next year. The flight out is always a bit sad, but beautiful and I am just grateful that Greta will be joining me on this trip for years to come.

Pretty good shot of the Lost River system flying out!
